KAISERLICHE MARINE COMMANDO DER OSTSEE-STATION
IMPERIAL NAVY COMMANDER OF THE BALTIC SEA STATION
BALTIC SEA STATION HIGH COMMAND

Schleswig Holstein Naval mail Kiel 1875

29th January 1875 - Entire letter (shown above) sent from the Marine Station in Kiel to Segeberg concerning the closure of the Marine Lazarett (military hospital), with reply. The letter folds to form its own envelope as shown below bearing a Prussian circular two ring date stamp KIEL 28 1 75. Inscribed Marine Sache (business) in manuscript, lower left hand corner. On reverse blue printed seal for with Imperial arms and anchor on beautiful embossed seal. There is a Marine station - Kiel stamp placed over the envelope flap where the envelope is sealed.

The Kaiserliche Marine was initially formed from the navy of Prussia, the only (German) state with a coastline. The (Imperial) navy was founded as a “Reich” or Imperial instrument in 1871 when the King of Prussia was proclaimed Deutscher Kaiser, German Emperor. The 1875 dated letter with affixed seal indicates that these seals were used virtually from the beginning of the Imperial navy.
